Florence County Government is Hiring a Naturalist Near Florence, SC
- Teaches all aspects of standards-based environmental education programs to public, private and homeschool groups.
- Greets groups and the general public visiting the EDC; disseminates information about park features, history, facilities and local areas of interest to park visitors.
- Coordinates and implements environmental education programs and activities in classroom and outdoor settings for a wide range of audiences.
- Responsible for feeding, handling and general care of the EDC’s live animal collection and displays.
- Assists visitors with park reservations for overnight accommodations, canoes and kayaks, rental facilities, etc.
- Prepares clear and comprehensive oral and written reports as well as exhibit design and set-up.
- Performs light housekeeping activities to ensure the attractiveness, cleanliness and safety of the EDC.
- Collects and accounts for revenue. Accurately completes and submits all required receipts and reports.
- Properly secures the building upon opening and closing.
- Works as needed on holidays, weekdays, weekends and/or evenings.
- Organizes and maintains environmental education supplies and materials.
- Keeps abreast of environmental education.
- Represents the Environmental Discovery Center and Lynches River County Park at community festivals and events.
- Performs all other related duties as required.
- Associate’s degree or higher with emphasis in environmental interpretation, life science, or elementary or middle school education or an equivalency preferred. Experience in the field of Environmental Education/Interpretation desired.
- Professional certification in interpretation, education, or similar field is preferred.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and computer operations.
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain, First Aid and CPR certification upon hire.
- Must be comfortable presenting education programs to groups of varying sizes.

- Must be able to withstand extreme heat and changing temperatures and weather conditions.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.
- Must be able to reach, bend, stoop, carry, move and lift 30 lb. objects regularly.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must have the ability to travel up to 10%.
